Bushcraft & Canoeing Film

A couple of years ago a talented, young filmmaker names James Chapman wrote to us and asked if you could make a short film about building a wood and canvas canoe. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to film a build due to time contraints so instead we headed into the Scottish wilderness with our own boats and shot for 3 days. While editing it, it was clear we needed a storyline. As I sat down to record the voiceover what ultimately poured out was my thoughts and reflections on bushcraft and nature connection. We hope you enjoy it!
This sounds like an absolutely fantastic combination! I've always been drawn to the idea of combining wilderness skills with the peaceful rhythm of paddling. There's something so elemental about navigating a waterway with nothing but your own strength and knowledge of the land. I can just picture the shots – the quiet glide of the canoe through still water, the crackle of a campfire, the satisfaction of crafting something useful from natural materials. Have you ever tried combining bushcraft techniques with a canoe trip yourself? I imagine learning to purify water or build a shelter right from the riverbank would be incredibly rewarding. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the film captures the connection between these two ancient practices.…
