Taking a Cybertracker Trailing Evaluation is the best way to personally evaluate your own current skill level, but it's also an excellent way to learn! Most people who take an evaluation for the first time are surprised just how effective and rewarding an evaluation really can be.
This Trailing evaluation will be led by John Rhyder. John is a Senior Tracker, Evaluator and very experienced outdoor educator. John has written the best two tracking books for the UK in our opinion ('Track & Sign' and 'Bird Tracks') and is an excellent trailer.
We have scheduled a 3 DAY TRAILING WORKSHOP with John immediately before this evaluation as taking a workshop is excellent preparation for an evaluation. By signing up to both this workshop and a trailing evaluation you will get 5 full days immersion into the wonderful world of trailing.
How a Cybertracker Track & Sign Evaluation Works?
-
The aim of the trailing evaluation is to be able to locate fresh sign of a large ungulate (usually Red Deer in Perthshire) and follow it until you can point out the animal and retreat from the area without the animal knowing you are there. There are only 4 candidates on any one trailing evaluation which, over the 2 days, means that there is enough time for each participant to get time to be assessed in this.
-
Each candidate will have time to be able to demonstrate their skills to the evaluator. The assessment criteria is based around skills such as fresh sign interpretation, following the trail, what you do when you lose the trail, field craft, stalking up to the animal and general observation skills. This can all be demonstrated while following an animal.
-
At the end of the evaluation, feedback will be given by the evaluator and any points for improvement or where you did really well will be explained to you.
-
Trailing evaluations are intense but are an incredible way to spend two days truly immersed in wildlife tracking. They are much more than just an assessment - they are a fabulous learning tool!
